Join us for this unusual and exciting opportunity to sing and to learn about this tremendous work in the impressive surroundings of Christ’s Hospital school.
Under the banner of West Sussex Festival Chorus three Sussex choirs have come together to organise this event – Christ’s Hospital Choral Society, Chantry Quire and West Sussex Philharmonic Choir.
Led by Peter Allwood, the workshop takes place on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October 2026 and is open to all singers interested in studying and singing this rarely-performed masterpiece.
With wide-ranging experience as a music teacher and head teacher, Peter is a freelance conductor, composer, musical director, workshop leader, and accompanist, with a particular passion for choral direction. He is currently music director of the Chantry Quire, and is an occasional guest conductor with other choirs and orchestras.
His penultimate teaching post was as Head of Music at Christ’s Hospital school when he was also Musical Director of Christ’s Hospital Choral Society. He has held workshops with all three participating choirs and is recognised as a brilliant, encouraging and hugely enthusiastic choral director, and one who achieves great results with his choirs.

Day one will focus on the choral parts and will also give participants an opportunity to understand the structure of the piece, whilst day two will involve soloists working alongside the choir before a complete run-through of the work at the end.
West Sussex Festival Chorus plan to follow up the workshop with a performance of ‘War Requiem’ in Chichester cathedral on 20 November 2027 and hope this weekend workshop will serve as an exciting introduction to this major project.
