Choral Workshop – “Boldly Byrd”
A one-day workshop for experienced choral singers to explore the sacred music of one of England’s finest composers, William Byrd.
Directed by Christopher Mabley, we will focus on Byrd’s Mass in four parts, and complement this with a selection of four-part motets for Corpus Christi. All music will be sung a cappella.
Participants should have confident music-reading skills, and expect to explore a variety of the particularities of 16C musical notation as well as some of the skills that a 16C singer would have been expected to employ. All scores will incorporate as much original notation as possible. All the music will be provided in advance in editions specially prepared by Christopher Mabley.
No specialist knowledge is required, as the notational expectations of the period will be explained to help singers at each stage as the day progresses.
